Document your room before you unpack

False damage claims work because of one asymmetry: the host has photos and you have vibes. Fix the asymmetry. Before your bags open, make a record of exactly what condition the place was in when it became your problem.

The two-minute walkthrough

  1. 1 Film one slow lap of everything: rooms, bathroom, walls, appliances, balcony.
  2. 2 Close-ups of anything already wrong: stains, chips, scratches, that mysterious burn mark.
  3. 3 Open things. Drawers, safe (empty, right?), fridge, oven. Someone else's leftovers become your cleaning fee if you skip this.
  4. 4 For cars and scooters: circle the body, then one shot of the fuel gauge and odometer.
  5. 5 Send the video to yourself by email, or drop it in the booking-app chat. Now the timestamp is held by a third party, not just your phone.

Do it again on the way out

Same lap after you pack, before the door closes for the last time. Now you own a bracket: got it like this, left it like this. Most disputes end right there.

If a claim lands anyway

  1. 1 Reply calmly with both videos and their timestamps. Facts, no adjectives; the person reviewing is scanning for evidence.
  2. 2 Dispute through the booking platform first. They can see timestamps too, and they adjudicate these daily.
  3. 3 If the charge hits your card regardless, a chargeback with your evidence is the backstop.

Tip

Keep the files until every deposit is home. On Discovery, filing them in the vault keeps the whole paper trail with the trip it belongs to.
