Treader signs you in with Google or with an email address and a password. What protects the account sits in two places: the sign-in screen, where you decide how long to stay signed in, and Settings, under Account, where you change your password, turn on two-step sign-in and sign out other devices. Make Treader yours in Settings covers the rest of Settings, and Export or delete your account covers leaving.

Ways to sign in

  • Google: tap Continue with Google on the sign-in screen, or Sign up with Google if you are new. On the sign-up screen, tick the Terms box first.
  • Email and password: sign up with your name, an email and a password, then type the 6-digit code Treader emails to that address. The code proves the address is yours, so a mistyped address stops you at the code screen.
  • If the code does not arrive, check your spam folder first. Resend code works after 30 seconds and the new code replaces the old one, and Change email fixes a typo.
  • Started signing up and never finished? Signing in with that address and its password sends a fresh code and takes you back to the code screen.

An emailed code is not a way to sign in by itself. Treader sends one to confirm a new address and to reset a forgotten password, and for nothing else.

Passwords

A password needs at least 8 characters, with a lowercase letter, an uppercase letter, a number and a symbol. A space does not count as a symbol. A strength meter fills as you type and a line under the field names whatever is still missing, so the button stays off until the password qualifies. Changing and resetting use the same rules.

  1. 1 Open Settings, under Account, and find Password.
  2. 2 Tap Change password, then type your current password and the new one twice.
  3. 3 Tap Update password. A new password that matches the current one is refused.

Staying signed in

The sign-in screen has a Keep me signed in box, ticked unless you clear it. Ticked, this browser stays signed in for up to 400 days, closing the browser included, and Safari does not sign you out after a week away. Cleared, Treader ends the session when you close the browser, so the next visit asks for your password again. The Google button honours the box too, so set it before you tap.

The choice belongs to the browser, not the account. On a shared or borrowed computer, clear the box before you sign in and tap Sign out when you finish.

Signing out, here or everywhere

Sign out in Settings, under Account, in the Session panel, ends the session on the browser or phone you are using and on no other. To end the rest, tap Sign out others beside Other devices in the same panel. Every other browser and phone is signed out, and this one stays signed in.

Tip

Use Sign out others after you lend a laptop, lose a phone or find a computer you left signed in. If you think someone else has your password, change it first, then sign out the others, so the new password is what every other browser needs to get back in.

Two-step sign-in

Two-step sign-in adds a 6-digit code from an authenticator app on your phone to your password. It uses an authenticator app only: there is no text-message option.

  1. 1 In Settings, under Account, find Two-step verification. It reads Off until you turn it on.
  2. 2 Tap Set up, then Continue. Treader shows the QR code and the setup key only now, never before.
  3. 3 Scan the QR code with an authenticator app on your phone. If you cannot scan it, tap Copy key and paste the key into the app.
  4. 4 Type the 6-digit code the app shows under Code from the app, then tap Turn on. The panel now reads On.

From then on, signing in asks for a code after your password, or after Google. Type the 6-digit code from the app and tap Verify & continue. A browser that stays signed in is not asked again until it signs in again.

To turn it off, tap Remove beside the app, then Remove again to confirm. Removing it needs a session that has already passed the code, so someone with only your password cannot take it off.

If you lose your phone

Treader does not issue backup codes, and nothing in Settings gets around the second step. The code screen says "Locked out of your second step? Contact support from the email on your account", and the setup note says your recovery is the email on the account. Write to support@treader.ca from that address, and keep that mailbox as safe as the password. Use a different account on the code screen signs this browser out.

Reset a password you forgot

  1. 1 On the sign-in screen, tap Forgot password? under the password field.
  2. 2 Enter your email and tap Send code. A 6-digit code arrives by email, and Resend code appears after 30 seconds.
  3. 3 Enter the code, type a new password twice, and tap Set new password. You are signed in when it saves.

Common questions

How do I sign out of Treader on all my devices?
In Settings, under Account, tap Sign out others beside Other devices. Every other browser and phone is signed out and the one you are using stays signed in. Sign out on its own ends only the device in your hand.
What does Keep me signed in do?
It keeps this browser signed in for up to 400 days, closing the browser included. Clear the box on the sign-in screen and Treader ends the session when the browser closes. The box is remembered per browser, not per account.
Can I use a text message for two-step sign-in on Treader?
No. Two-step sign-in uses an authenticator app only. Set it up in Settings under Account, then type the 6-digit code the app shows each time you sign in.
Why does Treader say my email and password don't match?
Sign-in gives one message for a wrong password and for an email with no account, so the form cannot be used to find out who has an account. Check both fields, or reset your password with Forgot password?
