On this page
Settings is where Treader learns your units, your home country and how you like it to look. Open it from the main menu under You, or press Cmd-K, or Ctrl-K on Windows, and type Settings. The search box at the top finds any row by name: type miles, dark or emails and the matching rows light up. Your choices are saved to your account, so a phone you sign in on later picks up what you set on your laptop.
Units and home country
- Distance: kilometres or miles, for the map and the gaps between stops.
- Temperature: °C or °F, for the weather along the trip.
- Time format: System, 12-hour or 24-hour, for clocks in messages and the itinerary.
- Currency: USD, CAD, EUR, GBP, AUD, NZD or JPY, for budgets and price estimates.
- Timezone: Auto follows your device. Pick a zone and dates and reminders resolve in it.
Home country is the one row that changes what you read, not only how it looks. The pocket guide, in Today mode and in the itinerary header, links the Wikivoyage guide for the province or country you are in and, abroad, your own government's travel advice. On a trip in your home country the travel guide leads and the basics fold away.
On your first visit Treader guesses your home country from where you connect from, or from your browser language, and takes your currency and units from it: miles in the US and the UK, Fahrenheit in the US, and your own currency when the list offers it. A setting you have already chosen is never overridden. If the guess is wrong, change it here, or use the "Not from ...? Change" link on the pocket guide.
Look and feel
- Theme: Light, Dark or System, which follows your device.
- Accent: seven colours, Treader, Cobalt, Oxblood, Violet, Slate, Moraine teal and Fireweed pink. The accent colours actions and tabs and the route on the map, which repaints as you pick.
- Interface scale: 90%, 100% or 110% for the whole workspace.
- High contrast: darker secondary text and stronger keyboard focus.
- Reduce motion: fewer slide and fade animations. It starts on when your device asks for less motion.
- Compact itinerary: tighter spacing, so more stops fit on screen.
- Open at startup: Last used, Planner, My Trips or Messages.
This accent is for you alone. The accent on your public profile is a separate choice in Edit profile, covered in Set up your profile and who can see it.
Emails and alerts
Two switches in Settings, under Privacy, cover Treader's own emails to you.
- Product and travel emails: occasional notes about new features, offers and places worth planning around. Off unless you turned it on at sign-up or here.
- Trip emails: a daily list of what your travel companions changed on a shared trip, and a Trip check 14 and 3 days before a trip you own starts. Off means you find out in the app.
Push alerts have no row in Settings, because they are per device and each comes with the feature that sends it: flight delay alerts, the stay price watch and the Today mode push on Pro, $4.99 CAD a month, and the campground watch on Discovery, $9.99 CAD a month. Each has its own switch for the device you are on, and your browser has to allow notifications for the site.
Map, privacy and Scout
- Map: the basemap (Standard, Muted, Satellite or Terrain), roads and place names over satellite, whether nearby places load as you pan, whether place cards load photos, whether a new stop is timed by the travel to it, and the walking pace used to estimate an imported route.
- Privacy: whether your profile is public, who can message you, invite you to a trip or share notes with you, whether collaborators see you online, read receipts, typing indicators and the search engine switches. Set up your profile and who can see it covers the profile ones.
- Scout & prefs: pace, budget, diet, accessibility, tone and more, free on every plan. Set your Scout preferences walks through every row.
Account, data and help
- Account: your profile, password, two-step sign-in and signing out, in Sign in and keep your account safe.
- Billing: your plan, payment method, invoices and referrals, in Plans, pricing and billing.
- Data: Export my data downloads your trips and records as one JSON file, and Delete account removes the account, both in Export or delete your account. Local caches shows how much Treader has stored on this device and Clear frees it, keeping you signed in and keeping your settings. Data providers names the service that draws places and routes. Reset preferences puts display, units, map and similar settings back to their defaults and leaves your garage alone.
- Help: the docs, the guided tours, the Getting started checklist while you still have it, a link to write to support, the Discord, the keyboard shortcuts and the legal pages.
Tip
The pocket guide links a government advice page only for travellers whose home country is Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand or Ireland. Any other home country still gets the Wikivoyage link, with no advice link beside it.
Common questions
- How do I switch Treader from kilometres to miles?
- Open Settings, then Units, and choose Miles under Distance. Temperature and time format are on the same tab. Treader starts you on miles if it guesses your home country is the US or the UK.
- How do I change the colour of Treader?
- In Settings, under Appearance, pick an Accent: Treader, Cobalt, Oxblood, Violet, Slate, Moraine teal or Fireweed pink. The route on the map repaints to match. Theme, on the same tab, switches between Light, Dark and System.
- How do I stop Treader emailing me?
- In Settings, under Privacy, switch off Product and travel emails for the occasional news, and Trip emails for the daily shared-trip list and the Trip check emails. Messages about your account and purchases are not part of either switch.
- Do my settings follow me to another device?
- Yes. Treader saves your units, appearance and map choices to your account, so a phone you sign in on picks up what you set on your laptop. Push alerts are the exception, because each device turns them on for itself.
