The campgrounds closest to Edmonton are not the swimming ones. Miquelon Lake and Elk Island's Astotin Lake are under an hour away, with showers and trails, but Alberta Parks lists Miquelon as no longer suitable for swimming and Parks Canada advises against swimming in Astotin. For a beach, Wabamun is under an hour west and Pigeon Lake, Gull Lake and Long Lake are 75 to 100 minutes out, and in 2026 four of the lakes below spent part of the summer under a blue-green algae advisory. Pick the campground for the weekend you want, then book it on the right morning.

Season dates are the 2026 ones on each campground's page; 2027 dates were not posted when this was checked on 25 October 2026. Drive times are from downtown in light traffic, rounded. Advisory dates are 2026.

In 2026 a night at these provincial campgrounds cost $31 to $39 without power and $39 to $47 with it, plus the $12 reservation fee. Astotin Lake was $31.75, Elk Island's oTENTiks $147.50 and the provincial yurts $125 to $170. For an RV close to the city, Glowing Embers RV Park in Acheson, about 25 minutes west of downtown, has 288 full-service sites for RVs only, with no tents.

Pick by the weekend you want

  • A first night out, close to home: Miquelon Lake. An hour southeast, power on most sites, showers, four yurts and 15 km of trails, inside the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve. It is a lake to walk around, not to swim in.
  • Bison and stars, no hookups needed: Astotin Lake in Elk Island. 75 unserviced sites and five oTENTiks near the water, with bison in the meadows on the drive in and the same dark sky preserve overhead. It books on Parks Canada's launch morning, not the 90-day window.
  • A beach weekend: Aspen Beach on Gull Lake has the big sandy beach and over 500 sites, and Pigeon Lake and Long Lake have beaches too. Check the advisories below before you pack the inflatables.
  • Floating a river: Pembina River, near Entwistle, with a tubing take-out in the park. Get in upstream; Alberta Parks asks that nobody enters the river from the campsites.
  • A big trailer that wants power: Jarvis Bay near Sylvan Lake is all power sites, ten minutes from the town beach, and Pigeon Lake and Aspen Beach have full-service sites.
  • A tent without leaving the city: Rainbow Valley, a private campground in Edmonton with 27 sites without power and three domes, open from the May long weekend to mid-October.

Swimming: read the advisory, not the beach

Alberta Health Services posts blue-green algae advisories lake by lake through the summer, and a beach on the campground map says nothing about this week's water. In 2026 advisories went up at Thunder Lake on June 22, Pigeon Lake on July 21, Long Lake on August 19 and Wabamun Lake on September 18. Parks Canada advises against swimming in Astotin Lake because of swimmer's itch and algae blooms, and Alberta Parks lists Miquelon Lake as no longer suitable for swimming. Check the AHS advisory list the week you go, and keep dogs out of water under an advisory.

When each one books

  • Provincial parks (everything in the table except Elk Island and Rainbow Valley): 90 days before your arrival date at 9:00 a.m. MT, at shop.albertaparks.ca. Yurts open 180 days ahead, and Pigeon Lake's need two nights. The Alberta Parks reservations guide has the 2027 long weekend dates.
  • Elk Island: Parks Canada sells the season on one launch morning. In 2026 it was Tuesday, February 3, at 8:00 a.m. MT, and the 2027 date was not posted when this was checked. The Parks Canada 2027 reservations guide tracks it.
  • Private campgrounds: on their own websites, with their own fees.
  • Out of season: Miquelon Lake and Pigeon Lake keep sites open through the winter, first come, first served, with no water or showers. Miquelon's 18 winter sites were $25 a night, cash or cheque.

For the 2027 May long weekend, a Friday arrival at a provincial campground opens on Saturday, February 20, 2027, at 9:00 a.m., and the yurts open on Sunday, November 22, 2026. The camping reservation calculator works out any other arrival date and adds the morning to your calendar.

A first weekend at Miquelon Lake

  1. 1 Friday: leave by 5 p.m. The campground is an hour southeast, down Highway 21 past New Sarepta and 20 km east on Highway 623.
  2. 2 Saturday: walk part of the 15 km of trails in the morning, then drive about an hour north to Elk Island for the bison in the afternoon. Elk Island charges its own day admission.
  3. 3 Saturday night: both parks sit in the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, so stay up for the stars if the sky is clear.
  4. 4 Sunday: pack up and you are home by lunch.
