Plan a trip

Plan fuel and check the road for your car

Save your car once, estimate what the driving costs, log fill-ups, and see where refills and posted limits fall on each long drive.

A road trip asks three questions a city trip does not: what the driving costs, where the next fill is, and whether the road takes your vehicle. The Fuel tab of the Trip Hub answers them for the car you actually drive.

Save your car in the garage

  1. 1 Open the menu and, under Plan, choose My Trips.
  2. 2 Switch to the Garage tab and tap Add a vehicle.
  3. 3 Only the name is required. Economy and tank give the range; height, length and weight feed the road checks. Set Fuel to Electric for an EV.
  4. 4 Tap Save vehicle. The garage holds up to eight.

Vehicles stay on your account and are never published with a trip.

Estimate the fuel cost

On Pro ($4.99 CAD a month), tap Plan fuel on the Fuel plan card. Pick a car under Vehicle to fill in its economy, tank and seats, add the price, then Save. The card shows the Estimate, Distance, Fill-ups and cost Per person across every day's driving. With a garage car picked, Your vehicle adds notes for this route, such as a required fuel stop, height over 4 m or tolls priced per axle.

Log fill-ups and pay each other back

Tap Log a fill-up, enter the station, day and total (volume and price per unit are optional), then Log fill-up. The card totals what you Actually paid and how much of the estimate is still to come. Each fill-up is a receipt, so it counts in the budget, and naming who paid under Paid by puts it into Settle up on the People tab. Logging needs Pro unless the trip already has a fuel plan.

Services on the route

For every drive of 100 km or more (up to the 12 longest), Services on the route checks OpenStreetMap for fuel and charging within 2.5 km of the road and names the longest stretch without a refill. Past the car's full-tank range, the line turns red and says to leave full. For an EV that stretch is measured between chargers; with no car linked, either kind counts. Free on every plan.

Route limits

Under each of those drives, the car's height, weight and length meet the limits OpenStreetMap lists on that road. Over one, a red line such as "OSM lists a 3.8 m limit" appears, and the same warning lands as a red badge on the drive in the itinerary and in Trip check. Under it, nothing is said. A tight limit the garage has no figure for asks you to add one, and unpaved stretches get their own line.

See it on the map

Tap the Map layers button and, under Route, turn on Fuel and charging on the route. Amber pins are pumps, green are plugs, and a red ring marks the last one before a long stretch without a refill. The picker under the toggle links a car to this trip on any plan, and the Fuel tab's services check uses the same car.

Tip

OpenStreetMap is crowd-sourced and can be stale, and Treader never routes around a limit. The posted sign always wins, and no single station should be the whole plan.

Common questions

Do I need Pro to use the vehicle garage?
No. Saving vehicles, the services check on each long drive, route limits and the map layer are free on every plan. The fuel cost estimate and logging fill-ups are part of Pro, at $4.99 CAD a month.
Can the people on my trip see my car?
No. Vehicles stay on your Treader account and are never published with a trip. Collaborators see the shared fuel figures and fill-ups, not your car.
