Split costs lives on the People tab of the Trip Hub. Add everyone sharing the bill, log who paid what, and Treader works out who owes who in as few payments as it can. Starting a split is part of Pro. Once a trip has a split, every editor can add to it, whatever their plan. It's separate from the trip budget: the budget tracks planned costs against a ceiling, this tracks money that actually changed hands.

Add who's splitting

  1. 1 Open the Trip Hub from the top bar, choose People, and hit Add a person on the Who's splitting panel.
  2. 2 Type a name. Someone with no Treader account is fine, a name is enough.
  3. 3 If they already share the trip with you, pick them from the dropdown next to the name to link the two, or tap their name after On this trip to add them already linked.

Log the shared expenses

  1. 1 Once someone is on the roster, hit Add an expense on the Shared expenses panel, choose who paid, then enter the amount and what it was for.
  2. 2 Receipts on the Budget tab with someone set under Paid by count toward the split automatically, nothing to re-enter.
  3. 3 If the trip has a fuel plan, Add fuel estimate adds the estimated fuel cost as its own shared expense. The button goes away once an estimate is on the list.

See who owes who

The Settle up panel shows the total, the even share each person owes, and the payments that square everyone up: Alex pays Sam, instead of everyone paying everyone. When everyone has already paid their share, it reads All settled up.

Share a settle-up card

  1. 1 Hit Share settle-up card under Settle up. Treader turns on a public link and copies it for you, and Copy link grabs it again later.
  2. 2 Anyone with the link sees the trip name and destination, what each person paid, and who pays who. No itinerary, no dates, and the page stays out of search results.
  3. 3 Hit Turn off and the link stops working right away.

Tip

Someone on the roster who is linked to a collaborator and has fallen behind shows up in a Reminders panel under Settle up, with a Send a reminder button. It sends a direct message in your own chat with them, at most once per person every six hours, so a nudge stays a nudge.

Common questions

Who can split costs on a trip?
Starting a split needs Pro. Once a trip has someone on its roster, anyone with edit access can add people and expenses whatever plan they're on, and viewers can only look.
Does everyone need a Treader account to be added?
No, a name is enough to add someone to the roster. Linking them, which a reminder needs, only works for someone who has accepted an invite to the trip.
Is the split always even?
Yes, the total divides evenly across everyone on the roster. There is no way to weight one person's share differently.
Does the settle-up link show the itinerary?
No, the shared card shows the trip name, destination, what each person paid, and who pays who, never dates or stops.
